Questions people ask.
General guideThe gauge is in the red. Can I keep going?
No. Pull over where it is safe and switch the engine off. Driving an overheating engine can cause serious engine damage. Never open the radiator or coolant reservoir cap while the engine is hot: the coolant is under pressure.
Can I just add water?
In an emergency water may get you off the road, but coolant is a mix that also protects against freezing and corrosion. Plain water left in the system can freeze in winter.
Why does my heater blow cold?
The heater uses hot coolant from the engine. Low coolant, a stuck thermostat, air in the system or a blocked heater core can all leave it cold.
Are all coolants the same?
No. Manufacturers specify different types, and some should not be mixed. The owner’s manual names the right one.
